How it works

How interview practice works

InterviewTraining.ai is interview practice for tradespeople who want to work in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or Canada. You watch an interviewer ask a question, you answer out loud, and you get a score with clear feedback.

This page shows each step.

Start practising

The practice flow in eight steps

  1. Sign up and set up

Create your account. Then choose your trade, your destination country and your English level.

  2. Choose what to practise

Pick a section, such as General Practice or Skills Practice. Then pick up to 3 topics or skills.

  3. Watch the interviewer

After a short "Get ready" countdown, a pre-recorded interviewer asks the question on video.

  4. Answer out loud

The microphone starts after the interviewer finishes. Your words show on the screen as you speak.

  5. Finish your answer

Press "I have finished". If the timer ends first, we mark what you have said.

  6. Read your feedback

You get a score from 0 to 10, with notes on what was good and what to add.

  7. Go on or try again

Press "Next question" to move on, or "Try this one again" to answer the same question again.

  8. Stop when you like

Press "Save and exit". Next time you continue from the next question.

Set up your trade, country and English level

Your trade (your occupation) decides the technical questions you get. Your destination country decides the general questions and the work culture topics. Your English level sets the time you have for each answer.

There are three English levels: Foundation, Working and Fluent. Choose the one that is true for you today. The trades page shows which trades have questions now.

Watch the interviewer first

Each spoken question starts with a pre-recorded interviewer on video. The question is also written on the screen. Some questions do not have a video yet, so they show the question as text only.

On a phone, the browser may need one tap first. Press "Play the question". Some trade questions also show a picture of the job.

Answer out loud

The microphone starts only after the interviewer has finished speaking. When you see "Listening to your answer", start speaking. Your browser turns your speech into text.

Speaking works in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Your browser will ask you to allow the microphone. If the microphone is blocked, or your browser cannot hear speech, a text box appears. Type your answer there.

The timer for each answer

Each answer has a timer. The time depends on your English level.

English levelTime for each answer
Foundation90 seconds
Working75 seconds
Fluent60 seconds

When the time ends, what you have said is sent for marking. You do not lose your answer.

The buttons while you answer

  • Listen again: replays the question. It keeps what you already said and pauses the clock.
  • Start again: clears your words so you can begin your answer again.
  • I have finished: sends your answer for marking.

Marking and the feedback screen

AI marking compares the text of your answer with a model answer. It compares the meaning, not the exact words. A valid different method gets full credit. Marking allows for simple English and for speech-to-text mistakes. The score is from 0 to 10, in steps of 0.5.

The feedback screen shows:

  • your score and a one-line summary
  • What you did well: the good points in your answer
  • What to add: the points you missed
  • What you said: the text of your answer
  • A stronger answer: a better answer, with a "Listen" button to hear it

An unsafe step in your answer is flagged.

If we did not hear an answer

Sometimes the microphone hears nothing. The result is then "We did not hear an answer". It does not count as a used question, and your saved place stays on that question. Choose "Try this one again" or "Skip this question".

Continue where you left off

The app saves your place in each set. The questions come in the same fixed order every time, so next time you continue from the next question. The Mock Interview is different: it mixes the questions in a random order.

Practise on a phone or a laptop

The app works on a phone or a laptop. To speak your answers, use Chrome or Edge and a working microphone.

The optional self-view camera

Press "Show my camera" to see your own face in a small corner window. It helps you check your eye contact and how you sit. The camera is optional. Only you can see it. It is never recorded, uploaded or stored. Our privacy policy has more detail.

My results

"My results" shows your recent answers and your past practice rounds. Use it to find the answers with low scores, then practise those topics again.

Questions and answers

Which browser should I use?

Use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge to speak your answers. In another browser you can type your answers.

What if my microphone does not work?

Allow the microphone for this site in your browser settings, then reload the page. Until then, you can type your answer.

Do I need perfect English to get a good score?

No. The marking compares the meaning of your answer with a model answer. It allows for simple English and speech-to-text mistakes.

Is my camera recorded?

No. The self-view camera is a preview that only you can see. It is never recorded, uploaded or stored.

Does "We did not hear an answer" use a marked question?

No. A question counts only when it is marked. See pricing for how marked questions work.

Will this get me a visa or a job?

No. InterviewTraining.ai is practice only and gives no migration or legal advice. For visa steps, check the official government website.
